For Do Savannah
Joanne Morton’s story sounds familiar to many of the creatives looking to carve their own path. She left New York and arrived via Tybee Island to Savannah.
“I really wanted to stay in New York, but I was too tired and to visit would be great, but I was too tired and broke. And so, I was like, where do I want to live? And based on all the places that I’d been to, I was like Savannah is everything I want. It’s flat. It’s beautiful. It’s by the ocean. It’s near New York, and everything. And it’s got lots of big cities around it. And I met some amazing people here. And I’m still friends with some of the people that I met the first time I visited Tybee,” she said.
“And so, I came back and then I ended up opening a healing art space – Anahata Healing Arts. I did that in 2013 and 2014. That was an experience and it made me realize I wanted to be there because I had an amazing art studio. I didn’t necessarily want to run a healing art space. But, you know, you get caught up in the manifestation. You’re like, oh, we could do this. And so, but at the same time, it gave me such an opportunity to understand who I am and what I want to do.”
Morton considers herself an intuitive artist. Intuitive art is a spiritual, connected process that allows the art to lead the way as images form through the layers of paint and a variety of other media. Intuitive art is a process of creating art using an inner awareness that is heart centered and does not rely on analysis.
“I’m an artist, I’m not a teacher. I’m a teacher, of course, but you know, I see myself as somebody who wants to make art that inspires other people to sort of have like, what I call a zip zap effect of your conscious,” Morton said.
“Awakening themselves, to go and take the action that they want to do to make themselves feel better. I want to feel good being me 24/7. That was the thing that I started back in 2003, 2004. I want to feel good being me no matter what I’m doing. Whatever job I’m doing, whoever I’m with, even if I’m sick in bed. I still want to feel good in my own skin. And that isn’t about being happy all the time. It’s not about being positive all the time. You can still be kind of feeling crappy and still be positive about it. So, I want to do what I love which is co-creating positive energy with other people.”
“So, I did this whole series of paintings. In 2017, I painted 100 canvases in all of them I painted: ‘We are here to love’ on this little four by sixes canvases. They’re all painted with an abstract background. I wanted to raise the love vibration,” she said.
“And the words, ‘we are here to love,’ came to me because whatever the energy is, that is that created the universe, whatever you want to call it. I believe that humans were created to experience human love. And human love is like the one of the most powerful energy sources there is in the world. The author who authored the book, ‘The Secret,’ Rhonda Byrne, wrote a book a couple years later, it was ‘The Magic,’ in it she said that everything that’s created in this world comes from love…Creation is love. And I feel like that’s why we’re here to experience it and to share it. And that’s what we’re here to love.”
The one-woman show will be divided into five parts. All based on a series of affirmation cards that Morton created.
“I’m using the cards as my chapters. The first one deals with fear. I’m going to talk about doing what I’m most afraid of, and really doing what you’re most afraid of for me is doing what I love. Doing what I need and what I want to be doing,” she said. “I live a very free-spirited life and I look at people who have responsibilities with children or different types of responsibilities. That doesn’t mean that you can’t make your childhood dream come true. And I want people to take that away with them. Anything is possible.
“This show is really kind of cathartic for me to just release my story into the world,” she continued. “The first 30 minutes of the performance will be me sharing stories, using that, and bringing the audience in. And then near the end of the first 30 minutes, I’m going to talk about what’s next for manifesting 2022. Because that’s what I’m calling the tour, ‘The Manifesting Mobile.’ Then I’m going to come back out and I’m going to do some live painting, some intuitive live painting on stage. I have gone around the country before and have asked individuals to fill out these circles with either intentions or wishes and our audience will get to do the same. As I live paint the audience will read some of these circles that will become part of the ‘The Manifesting Mobile.’ I’m hoping that there’ll be some sort of collective conversation and my goal is to raise the vibe, the positive energy vibe. I want them to come, knowing that they’re going to leave feeling energized and loved, because we’re here to love.”
